Sem Senior Wins 2013 National Merit Scholarship

Eliza A. Hopkins, a senior at Buffalo Seminary, has been named a 2013 National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winner. A member of both the National Honor Society and Cum Laude Society, Eliza has distinguished herself as a High Honors student throughout her tenure at Sem. With this most recent honor, she joins an elite group of nationwide high school scholars.

According to an official announcement from the National Merit Scholarship Corp., Eliza was chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding finalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. Finalists in each state were judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.

These students were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who appraised a substantial amount of information submitted by both the finalists and their high schools: their academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official. In April, Eliza represented Buffalo Niagara and was named a semifinalist at the 30th annual English-Speaking Union (ESU) National Shakespeare Competition for high school students.

She is the outgoing president of Sem's Book Club, outgoing president of the Justice League, outgoing co-president of Outdoors Club and a member of Glee Club and Semachords. She is also an athlete on the all-girls school's varsity soccer and lacrosse teams. In the fall, she will begin her college career at Yale University, where she plans to major in linguistics.
