Bayer HealthCare LLC, Animal Health Division, this week encouraged owners of America's 78 million dogs to take an important first step towards heartworm testing and prevention by making an appointment with their pet's veterinarian in April, which is National Heartworm Awareness Month.

Do you love your pet, but hate the mess? For dog owners especially, cleaning up after their furry friends is a daily battle.

Dogs are more than happy to track mud and grass from the backyard to your floor or leave fur and dander to collect on your carpet and furniture. What's a loving pet owner to do? Dogs will be dogs, but there are ways to prevent some messes and clean up others more easily. Take a look at a few helpful tips for you and your pet:

Pre-Mother’s Day Dinner and Concert to Benefit Pet Connection

A Pre-Mother’s Day chicken dinner and concert featuring musical entertainment by The Easy Street Big Band will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Marilla Fire Hall, located at Two Rod Road and West Avenue. Proceeds from the event will benefit Pet Connection Programs Inc., a nonprofit special care and maternity shelter for dogs and cats located in Marilla.

Tickets are just $15 per person and include a complete chicken dinner, dessert by Rosemary’s Bakery and an open bar. Other highlights of the event include a basket auction, 50/50 raffle, great door prizes and an appearance by Mr. No - The Balloon Guy!

Americans love pets — to the tune of 62 percent of all households with at least one pet in residence, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Statistics show that 72.9 million homes accommodate approximately 78.2 million dogs and 86.4 million cats.

Dog owners who think a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s are barking up the wrong tree — and they are not alone. In fact, according to a recent survey, many pet owners have beliefs about their pet’s health that are not accurate or grounded in science.

For example, the study — commissioned by the Greenies brand, the maker of dental chews and treats for pets — found that almost half of pet owners believe that dogs’ mouths are cleaner than humans’ and that any type of chewing is good for a dog’s teeth.
