Mills, Collins Pardon Shirley the Pig at the Erie County Fair

Mills, Collins Pardon Shirley the Pig at the Erie County Fair

Erie County Legislator John J. Mills and Erie County Executive Chris Collins changed the fortunes of one lucky pig this past weekend, saving her from the dinner table and giving her a second chance at life.

Responding to a request from a local teenager and 4-H participant, Mills and Collins pardoned Shirley the pig at the Erie County Fair on Sunday, August 14, 2011. Rachael Smith, who raised the 265-pound pig from birth, recently wrote to Legislator Mills hoping he would consider buying Shirley at the 4-H Youth Market Auction at the Erie County Fair.  Legislator Mills liked the idea and contacted County Executive Chris Collins, who was also enthusiastic about the opportunity.

National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Front Porch Day 2011

National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Front Porch Day 2011

National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Day is on Monday August 8, 2011. Have you ever heard of this celebration? I hadn't, but growing up with a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who grew bushels and bushels of zucchini, I was aware of those big paper bags of zucchini that got left on neighbors' front porches every August and September. What I did not know is that there is an entire day (or night, if you're really sneaky) devoted to leaving the abundance of zucchini we grow on our neighbors front porches!

What do you do if you wake up tomorrow morning and find a big paper sack filled with zucchini on your front porch? You can make many things, and then send your neighbor a thank you note for all the free zucchini you got to enjoy.

Barbecue Season is Upon Us! Remember to Play it Safe at the Grill

Lifesaving Tips from the Firemen’s Association of the State of NY…

With Memorial Day weekend right around the corner, many people will be hosting backyard barbecues. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is reminding residents to follow important fire safety tips so that they can enjoy a safe summer season.

“The outdoor cookout season will soon be in full swing.  Unfortunately, a barbecue grill could start a fire if certain safety rules are ignored,” said Firemen’s Association of the State of New York President David Jacobowitz.  “It’s important to position the grill far away from siding, deck railings, trees and other flammables. When gatherings involve children, it’s critical that a child-free zone of at least three feet is established around the grill.”
