Mother of 3 Injured in Crash, Community Says Intersection Needs Changes

EAST AURORA, N.Y. - East Aurora Police say a Town of Holland woman was critically injured when the van she was driving was hit by a tractor trailer Tuesday morning.

Ann Sherry, 43, Holland, N.Y. , a mother of three was pulling out of Reiter Road at the intersection with Rt. 20A in East Aurora when the collision took place. She is listed in critical condition at ECMC. Her four-year-old son was in a car seat in the back seat of the van and not hurt. However, he was taken to Women and Childrens' Hospital as a precaution.

The driver of the tractor trailer, James Chaney of Tennesee, was also not injured.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

That crash is raising serious concerns about the safety of that intersection.

People who live around that intersection say accidents are all too common. One woman told 2 On Your Side there's about an accident every month in that location

There are stop signs at both sides of Reiter Road leading on to Route 20A but neighbors say more needs to be done.

"I would like to see the limit go down to 30, maybe all the way into Wales to slow down the traffic," said Patti Schmidt, who lives right near the intersection.

"I would be for a blinking light up there, maybe saying an intersection is approaching or something you're more aware of," said Gretchen Morgan, who lives nearby.

Any changes would take a lot of coordination because it involves both the county and the state.

Reiter is a county road.  An Erie County spokesman says there are no requests for any new or changed signs there, but say engineers are willing to listen to any ideas for change. Route 20A is a state road and it was too late in the day Tuesday to get concrete numbers on just how many complaints they've received.
