Planting program proposed for vets in parks

EAST AURORA, NY - A unique agriculture and conservation program which is being promoted for veterans is now in the works at Knox Farm State Park in East Aurora.

Paul Cwiklinski, who is a veteran and a hunter, is setting up a half-acre plot of park land with crops planted as a food source for deer, turkey and other wildlife. He says people will be drawn to see the wildlife in the park where no hunting is allowed.

And he hopes veterans will see this as a way to get involved.

"If they're wondering, well, what can I do now, or what is my direction ... with this kind of a project it could stimulate interest in agriculture, wildlife biology, animal husbandry, park service, forestry, or DEC even. There's a myriad of things that they could possibly get into."

Cwiklinski hopes to see the planting program expanded to other state and county parks.
