Fatal tractor rollover in Town of Wales

TOWN OF WALES, NY - A man and his seven-year-old grandson died when the tractor they were on flipped over Sunday morning, an Erie County Sheriff's Office deputy tells 2 On Your Side.

John Rutkowski, 56, was trying to pull a small tree out of the ground at his home at 13696 Schang Road using a chain. Something went terribly wrong and the tractor flipped over backwards, trapping Rutkowski and his seven-year-old grandson underneath.

Rutkowski's wife, who was home with another grandchild at the time, called 911. It was 11:32 a.m.

Erie County Sheriff's Office Captain Ron Kenyon told media that neighbors helped move the tractor before sheriff's deputies arrived.

Rutkowski was declared dead at the scene. His grandson was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in South Buffalo but did not survive his injuries.

Captain Kenyon said the boy was visiting his grandparents from his home in Cheektowaga. Kenyon called the incident "an unspeakable, immense tragedy."

Mercy Flight was called to the scene but wasn't needed.
