Daemen Receives National Distinction As a ‘Great College to Work For’

Daemen College has been named to The Chronicle of Higher Education’s 2014 Honor Roll as a “Great College to Work For,” an elite distinction that places the college as one of the top 10 small four-year institutions to work for in the nation. This marks the first time Daemen has been selected for this distinguished workplace recognition as one of the best colleges in the United States.

“The fact that Daemen has been named one of the nation’s top 10 small four-year colleges to work for is a tribute to our devoted faculty and staff, who together make Daemen a remarkably collegial workplace and an exceptional learning community for our students,” said Daemen President Gary A. Olson. “We are honored to receive this prestigious national recognition.”

The results, which were released today (July 21) in The Chronicle’s seventh annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a survey of more than 43,000 employees at 278 colleges and universities across the U.S.

Overall, 92 of the 278 participating institutions in the 2014 survey earned “Great College to Work For” recognition for specific best practices and policies. Daemen was included in results for small four-year institutions (2,999 students or fewer), with results also reported for medium (3,000-9,999 students) and large (10,000 or more students) colleges and universities.

Of the total colleges and universities that were recognized, 42 were designated as Honor Roll institutions, including Daemen. The college excelled in nine of 12 categories in the 2014 survey, making it one of the most cited among small-size four-year colleges.

Daemen was recognized for excellence in:

• Collaborative Governance: Faculty members are appropriately involved in decisions related to academic programs.

• Compensation and Benefits: Pay is fair, and benefits meet the needs of employees.

• Job Satisfaction: Provides insight into the satisfaction with job fit, autonomy and resources.

• Respect and Appreciation: Employees are regularly recognized for their contributions.

• Professional/Career-Development Programs: Employees are given the opportunity to develop skills and understand requirements to advance in their careers.

• Supervisor or Department-Chair Relationship: Supervisor makes expectations clear and solicits ideas.

• Teaching Environment: Faculty members say the institution recognizes innovative and high-quality teaching.

• Tenure Clarity and Process: Faculty members say requirements for tenure are clear.

• Work/Life Balance: Policies give employees the flexibility to manage their personal lives.

According to The Chronicle, the survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback.

“Great Colleges to Work For” is one of the largest and most respected workplace-recognition programs in the country.
