Meet a Local Farmer: Jerry Miller

Meet a Local Farmer: Jerry Miller

by Sandy Szalinski

It was pouring rain when four of us from the East Aurora Cooperative Market dashed inside the red barn, where a sign read, “Established 1853, Miller Farm.” Jerry Miller, former banker turned farmer, greeted us with a coy smile. We immediately bombarded him with questions in order to get to know the man behind the flowers, vegetables, and eggs that his farm has provided the local community for the past 20-plus years.

Transitioning to Organics: Sally Cunningham

Transitioning to Organics: Sally Cunningham

Author, journalist and master organic gardener Sally Cunningham, will present a talk on “Transitioning to Organics,” March 20 at 2 p.m. in the East Aurora High School Auditorium.

Cunningham will discuss both the rationale for and how to transition to an organic gardening system, placing the emphasis on “system” and her philosophy about it.  Whether a beginner or a seasoned organic practitioner, she will address bio-diverse gardens and share her wisdom about why we make the choices we do.

Part of the EA Co-op’s mission is education.  “We feel that teaching people how to eat well is just as important as providing healthy food options for them when the market opens,” Board President Sheila Conboy said.  “Organic gardening is a hot topic, and holding the event on the first day of spring is a nice way to kick off the new season.”
