Go Big, or Go Home

Go Big, or Go Home

With an established presence on Main Street in East Aurora, more than 600 member-owners and a twice-weekly Mini Market, we’re often asked why we don’t just “open small.” It’s an understandable question, but one which we must respond to by saying, “Like a fine wine, it takes time.”

The Co-op Process

Like the grapes on the vine that require nurturing, support and time to mature, so too does a start-up cooperative market. Both tasks are a process.

The process we’re following is based on a proven development model established by industry experts. We’ve aligned ourselves with top consultants to ensure we are following best practices.  We’ve done a market study, created a business plan, attended conferences, applied for grants (and received $10,000 last fall) and trained a legion of volunteers. In short, not only are we 100 percent confident in the viability of this enterprise, we are equally determined to “go big or go home.”

Flex Your Elder Muscles

East Aurora Community Education offers several popular fitness courses, some designed especially for senior citizens or those with health issues that require a slower pace.

Fight Age with Muscle with Jane Schmitt is our latest new offering.  This course will strengthen your muscles to keep you fit, or can start beginners on the path to new strength. The only equipment you need is an inflatable ball (provided), used to position your body or add resistance. The workouts target every major muscle group with one to four exercises — proven classics like crunches, hamstring curls and chest presses.  They’re all gently paced with easy transitions and modifications to suit any fitness level. Please bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothes.  Class begins Monday, February 27 at 10:15 AM.

Your Dog's Good Looks Start From the Inside Out

Your Dog's Good Looks Start From the Inside Out

(Welcome to our pet column, courtesy of Pet Connection Programs Inc. of Marilla. We post a new article each week, so be sure to check back on a regular basis!)

Let's face it — when it comes to a dog's looks, people often think that theirs is the most gorgeous they've ever seen. They hold their head high on walks around the block, and think no dog at the park stands a chance against their pooch's appearance.

But constant grooming and doggie outfits can only go so far — real beauty lies in a dog's overall health. After all, inner health equates to real outer beauty.

Legislator Dixon Circulates Petition for State Takeover of Medicaid Costs

Legislator Dixon Circulates Petition for State Takeover of Medicaid Costs

Legislator Lynne Dixon announces she is hosting an online petition on her County Website to collect signatures from Erie County residents who support New York State taking over all Medicaid costs. In Erie County, the annual cost of Medicaid is more than $201 million; more than 95 percent of the property tax collected.

“The current formula used to pay for Medicaid costs is extremely unfair to all 62 counties in New York State. The state has chosen to offer non-mandated services but passes the cost onto local municipalities. Nearly every $1 collected from Erie County property taxes goes directly to pay for Medicaid,” said Legislator Dixon.

The issue, Legislator Dixon explained, is that the State chooses to offer services beyond what is mandated by the federal government and forces the cost onto counties. Non-mandated services currently offered in New York include, dental and vision care, rehabilitation, and prescription drugs.
