How to Protect Your Pet From Dental Problems

According to a study by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and Hill's Pet Nutrition, dental care ranks second to weight control as the most important thing pet owners can do to increase the length of their cat or dog's life.

Proper oral care can play a key role in your pet's overall quality and length of life, by helping to avoid dental problems such as tooth infections and tooth loss among a broader range of health issues, including organ damage, strokes, emphysema, osteoporosis and diabetes.

Here's how you can reduce the risk of oral health problems for your cat or dog:

• Take your pet to a veterinarian for regular physical examinations and dental cleanings.

• If you notice bad breath or a change in eating or chewing habits in your pet, don't wait to take them in for a check-up as this could be a sign of a dental problem.

• Practice a regular dental care routine at home, including brushing your pet's teeth with a specially designed brush and toothpaste or water. It is best to start when your pet is a kitten or puppy, but grown dogs and cats can learn to tolerate brushing by introducing it gradually.

• Consider feeding your pet precisely balanced nutrition with enhanced oral care benefits, such as Hill's Science Diet Adult Oral Care dog and cat food made with a clinically proven, fiber technology that helps scrub teeth and reduce plaque build-up.
