Learn What Treats Will Do to Your Pet’s Weight

In a recent study conducted by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and Hill's Pet Nutrition, veterinarians said that giving pets too many treats is one of the most common mistakes pet owners make when feeding their dogs or cats.

If you reward your pet with treats or table scraps you might be surprised to learn about the negative impact these treats can have on his or her weight. Here's how some dog and cat treats would translate to an average (150 lb.) human:

• Feeding a 20-lb. dog one small cookie = eating a 2 oz. chocolate bar

• Feeding a 20-lb. dog 1 hotdog = eating 2 hamburgers

• Feeding a 10-lb. cat 1 cup of whole milk = eating 5 (2 oz.) chocolate bars

• Feeding a 10-lb. cat 1 oz. cheddar cheese = eating 3-½ hamburgers
