Eye Exam Recommended Before the Start of the New School Year

Summer is passing by at a rapid pace, and before you know it moms and dads across Western New York will be heading out to purchase school supplies and new clothing for the upcoming 2014-15 school year. But have you given any thought to having your child’s vision tested before he or she heads back to the classroom?

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, children should receive an eye evaluation once before the age of 3 and every one to two years until the age of 19.

“Visiting an eye care professional for a comprehensive eye exam is really the only way to be sure your child’s eyes are healthy,” said Michael Tomasik, owner of Tomasik Optical in Orchard Park and Lackawanna. “A child's vision needs to be checked annually by a doctor of optometry or ophthalmology. As their bodies grow, their eyes can change.

“While schools are required to perform eye screening tests once a year, they should not take the place of a comprehensive eye examination by a highly trained and well educated eye care professional,” Tomasik added.

Some of the telltale signs of vision problems among children include frequent eye rubbing, blinking, squinting or holding a book very close to the face when reading. A sudden difficulty with reading or completing schoolwork could be other indications of vision problems. And there’s always the chance that your child may come right out and say that he or she is having problems seeing the blackboard or SmartBoard in the classroom, or experiencing headaches while at school or reading at home.

“Because a child’s vision can change frequently during the school years, regular eye and vision care is extremely important,” said Tomasik. Eye examinations at Tomasik Optical are offered at their Orchard Park location at 3800 N. Buffalo Road. For more information, please call the Orchard Park location at 667-0004 or the Lackawanna store, located at 1258 Electric Ave., at 825-7434.
