Help Your New Cat Adjust to the Family

Bringing a cat or kitten home is exciting for anyone, but getting used to a new housemate can take some time. Mieshelle Nagelschneider, an animal behaviorist and Arm & Hammer spokesperson, has a few things you can do to make the transition easier and help your new family member feel settled faster:

Sanctuary: Set up a sanctuary room for your cat. This can be a spare bedroom with a door that can shut until your new cat has adjusted to his surroundings. Nagelschneider points out that this will keep kitty separate from his new home (and other cats) until he's more comfortable.

Resources: By providing your cat with all the necessary resources, you eliminate the stress or tension your cat may feel as he transitions into your home.

Litter boxes: Make sure the litter box is easily accessible and appealing to your cat, or better still, locating litter boxes throughout your home can prevent any mishaps from occurring. To keep your cat happy, clean the box often and use an odor neutralizing product.

Spend time with your new cat: Let your new cat get used to you in doses (a few hours a day); initiate play to help him feel more relaxed and confident in his new environment. Sometimes your cat will need time to warm up to you so make sure to give him the privacy and alone time he needs.

Slowly introduce your new family member to other pets: This must be done in a calm, non-confrontational way. Let your new cat explore the house without the other pets, allowing him to become accustomed to the other animals' scents.
