Church of the Nativity Presents Noted Expert on Human Rights

Town of Tonawanda, NY -- Liberation Theology and the grass roots movement for social justice will be the topic of a FREE presentation by Reverend William Wipfler, former Director of the Human Rights Office of the National Council of Churches, Tuesday, May 17th at 7:00 p.m. at Church of the Nativity, 1530 Colvin Boulevard near Sheridan Drive in the Town of Tonawanda.

Liberation Theology influenced the women’s rights movement in the US and the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. Today it continues to influence the grass roots efforts for social justice in churches around the world.

Rev. Wipfler was present at the center of a revolution in the life of the Christian Church in Latin America during the 1960s and 1970s and was a leader in the evolving Liberation Theology movement there to end torture and repression. He was a personal friend of martyred Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador and was with him the day before he was murdered.

Rev. Wipfler is currently Vicar of St. Matthias Episcopal Church in East Aurora. His talk at Nativity will include the story of the church in Latin America, how his social justice ministry shaped his own spiritual life and how Liberation Theology continues to resonate in the church today.

The Church of the Nativity is at 1530 Colvin Boulevard near Sheridan Drive in the Town of Tonawanda.
It is a United Church of Christ congregation that welcomes people of every age, race, marital status, sexual orientation, means, ability and spiritual tradition. On the Web at NativityUCC.org
