Catholic Charities' 2011 Appeal Hits $10 Million Mark

BUFFALO, N.Y., June 1, 2011 – The 2011 Appeal in support of Catholic Charities of Buffalo has topped $10 million, with less than $500,000 needed to achieve its goal of $10.5 million, the organization announced today. The goal is within reach as a recent push to contact lapsed large gift donors raised the total to $10,023,942.68.

With about four weeks left until the end of Catholic Charities’ fiscal year on June 30, an additional $476,057.32 is needed in cash and pledges to reach the goal.

“Ten million dollars is a significant milestone for this campaign, and one we are grateful to be able to reach at this time,” said Sister Mary McCarrick, OSF, diocesan director for Catholic Charities. “The dedicated efforts of our volunteers and generous donors have helped us move closer and closer to our goal and we could not be more thankful. They are truly making a positive impact to the lives of those we serve.”

New Slogan: We Want Your Suggestions!

New Slogan: We Want Your Suggestions!

Western New York is under fire from a New York City based magazine for the new “Buffalo: For Real” campaign, which it has dubbed a laughing stock.

Advertising Age and its writers claim:

“Tourism slogans are reliably corny, but last week New York state took the grand prize for "Huh?" with a newly anointed slogan for its fair city to the north that's best known for its proximity to Niagara Falls and everyone's favorite 25-cent bar snack.”

To add insult to injury, in a recent Skype interview with 2 On Your Side’s own Marissa Bailey, the writer of the article, Rupal Parekh, said she and her colleagues at Ad Age "had a good laugh" about the new slogan.

'Tails on the Trails' Event Will Benefit Pet Connection Programs Inc.

Pet Connection Programs Inc., a maternity and special care animal shelter located in Marilla, will hold its sixth annual “Tails on the Trails” dog walk from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at the Como Lake Park Casino in Lancaster. Proceeds from the event will benefit the animal shelter, founded in 1984.

“We are excited about Tails on the Trails as it brings out so many pet owners and their favorite four-legged friends to help our homeless animals at the shelter,” said Julie Garvey, president of Pet Connection Programs Inc. “The people who participate in this event know that just a little bit of extra effort can help save a dog or cat’s life, and we appreciate that.”

In only 18 months and launching on nothing but a promise, the East Aurora Cooperative Market, Inc., has evolved from a topic of discussion over coffee among friends to an incorporated entity with an eight-member board of directors, nearly 50 volunteers and more than 500 members.  The first 500 member-owners, known as Seed Members, was a milestone reached on April 23.

To celebrate this 500-member milestone, a community celebration is slated for Wednesday, May 25 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the co-op’s business office, at 618 Main St. in East Aurora.
