WNY AmeriCorps & WNY Veterans Housing Coalition Compete for $25K in Foundation’s Aprons in Action Facebook Contest

BUFFALO, NY –  A project to renovate a nine unit housing complex for disabled Veterans and elderly citizens at 1416 Main Street, Buffalo, has been selected as a finalist for Aprons in Action, The Home Depot Foundation’s unique Facebook voting program, and now haS the opportunity to win the grand prize of a $25,000 gift card from The Home Depot.

Beginning May 2nd, WNY AmeriCorps and WNY Veterans Housing Coalition are urging the WNY community to visit http://www.facebook.com/homedepotfoundation and vote every day in May under the “giving back” section; the finalist with the most votes will win the grand prize.

“Being selected as a finalist for the Aprons in Action program is an honor, and we are so thankful for the recognition,” said Kate Sarata, acting CEO of WNY AmeriCorps. “If we actually win the $25,000 Home Depot gift card, we’ll be able to serve along-side Team Depot volunteers to replace floors, repair walls, install energy efficient measures, and install new fixtures to benefit elderly and disabled residents of WNY Veterans Housing Coalition’s Engine #16 residential facility.  So we encourage everyone to go to Facebook and vote for us!”

By being selected for the Aprons in Action contest, the non-profit organizations will receive at least $5,000 in Home Depot gift-cards to put towards the project, but the additional $20,000 is only possible with the support of Western New Yorkers.

Working together, WNY AmeriCorps and Team Depot volunteers have renovated hundreds of homes, schools, public parks, and non-profit community centers over the last five years, including the immensely successful Hands On Schools and Good & Green Homes projects.

The final percentages of votes for each nonprofit will be posted on The Home Depot and The Home Depot Foundation’s Facebook pages on June 1st  at 9:00 am ET.
