Erie County Legislator Edward A. Rath, III recognized the accomplishment of the 2012 Envirothon’s champions. Buffalo Homeschoolers, consisting of six team members from Amherst and Clarence, were repeat winners, taking first place at the 10th annual Erie County Envirothon held in May. A reception in the team's honor was held June 22 at Garrison Park in Williamsville.

With its victory in Erie County, the Buffalo Homeschoolers qualified for the New York State competition where they had an impressive finish, placing seventh out of 48 teams.

“I am thrilled to honor this exceptional team of young people. Their dedication and hard work is truly impressive and they represented Erie County well. It is my privilege to recognize their efforts and wish them well as they pursue great endeavors,” said Legislator Rath.

The Buffalo Homeschoolers team included: Elias Ayoub, 15, of Clarence; Mario Ayoub, 18, of Clarence; Lucas Colõn, 15, of Amherst; Abraham Kenmore, 17, of Clarence Center; Eleanor Rummell, 16, of Amherst; and Alanna Sade-Milberg, 18, of Amherst. The team’s advisor is Brooke Ayoub.

“They are an outstanding group of kids that work hard and are passionate about our environment,” said Brooke Ayoub, who has been the advisor for five years and credits all the team members’ parents for partnering with her to support the group.

“Coordinated by the Erie County Soil and Water Conservation District, the Erie County Envirothon is an outdoor, hands-on natural sciences competition that challenges students. It is an excellent opportunity for students interested in environmental science to learn from local natural resources professionals as well as to spend a day enjoying the outdoors. The Buffalo Homeschoolers team did an excellent job at the county and state level and I am honored to congratulate them here today,” said Melanie Saunders, Erie County Envirothon Coordinator.

Last year’s Buffalo Homeschoolers team, including Mario and Elias Ayoub, Kenmore, Sade-Milberg, and Rummell, also took first place at the 2011 Erie County Envirothon. At the 2011 state competition, the team took first in the Wildlife category and finished seventh overall.

Erie County first competed in New York’s inaugural Envirothon in 1990. Since 2002, Erie County has held its own local competition and has had thousands of student competitors participate.

The NYS Envirothon is an environmental education competition where a team of high school students work together in hopes of winning scholarships and awards.  The teams compete in five different environmental categories, soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, and wildlife, and a current environmental issue.

Ayoub noted that the team has successfully worked with Earth Spirit Educational Services (www.earthspiritedu.org) for many years. Earth Spirit provides environmental advising for the team to prepare for the Envirothon. Ayoub also thanked National Fuel/Grid for sponsoring the team at the state competition.
