Dog Ears Bookstore, Erie County Youth Bureau Team Up for Successful Camps

Dog Ears Bookstore recently finished three weeks of reading and writing summer camps sponsored by the Erie County Youth Bureau. The camps were run by New York State-certified teachers and featured reading and writing activities, games and much more, all of which aligned with Common Core and New York State Standards in education.

Each morning the children gathered at the bookstore to discuss the day’s activity which was followed by a related writing piece. At the end of the week, each participant had five publishable pieces of work in their portfolio. This is the first year Erie County has sponsored the camps that keep children engaged in learning throughout the summer months, ensuring a smooth transition to the next school year.

“By sponsoring this wonderful community offering, Erie County not only covers the cost of the facilitators and collaborators, but the Youth Bureau also makes sure each child has the supplies and needs to flourish in this environment,” said Thomas McDonnell, director of the nonprofit bookstore. “The children who attended had a wonderful experience and left not only thrilled with the approach but asking for next year’s camp dates!”

Dog Ears would also like to thank musician Grace Stumberg, playwright and comedian Tim Joyce, and Chet Fery of Breadtime Stories for their participation in the camp, along with teachers Moe Myers, Shannon Krug, Maureen McDonnell, Sheri Blake and Bethany Vivian Crowe.
