South Buffalo native Helen “Nellie” Moran, author of “A Sleeping Dog,” will visit Dog Ears Bookstore at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 16, to sign copies of her new book. The nonprofit bookstore is located at  688 Abbott Road in South Buffalo.

“A Sleeping Dog” is a mystery within a mystery. It is set in a very Catholic college campus in the late 1970s. The protagonist, Molly Monaghan, is a senior journalism major whose best friend, Nancy Kiernan, is investigating a murder that has become a cold case after 20 years. When Nancy is stabbed to death in the campus parking lot, Molly is sure that the murderer is the same killer of Louise Porter, the victim in the case Nancy was investigating.

The author, who earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from St. Bonaventure University and her master’s degree in English education from the University at Buffalo, is currently an English teacher at Lafayette High School in Buffalo. During her career she has also taught at Leonardo DaVinci High School in Buffalo, Immaculate Conception School in East Aurora and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School in Orchard Park.

June 16 also marks the occasion of “Bloomsday,” a commemoration and celebration of the life of Irish writer James Joyce during which the events of his novel “Ulysses,” which is set on June 16, 1904, are relived. It is observed annually on June 16 in Dublin and elsewhere. Moran, who is very active in South Buffalo’s Irish community, has also studied Irish literature at Trinity College in Dublin.
