USFL Book, Poetry Anthology Available Exclusively at Dog Ears Bookstore

Dog Ears Bookstore, a unique nonprofit bookstore and literary arts center located at 688 Abbott Road in South Buffalo, is the only store in the United States where consumers can purchase two very unique books — one about the defunct United States Football League and the other an anthology of poetry compiled by local poets.

USFL: The Rebel League the NFL Didn’t Respect but Feared, was written by Mike Damergis, designed and edited by Carolyn A’Hearn and published by Pennylane Productions, Inc. Available in limited quantities and priced at $29.95, each book available at Dog Ears is personally autographed by the author. Included in this full-color, 144-page in-depth look at the USFL are stories on Buffalo football greats Jim Kelly, Doug Flutie, Marv Levy and Ray Bentley. It is a must for any football fan or sports memorabilia collector.

“Growing up in the ’80s was awesome,” said Damergis, “but nothing lasts forever, including the USFL. It was a great league that did things differently from the NFL and it was great to have football from March through July. I really missed the players and teams once the league folded. I felt the league could have survived if it stayed the course. Through my years in sports radio, I waxed poetically about the merits of the league, the players and coaches.

“I was near completion of my master’s in journalism at Iona College and I needed a senior thesis,” Damergis added. “When it came time to do my thesis, I wanted to tell a story that people weren't aware of — hence my book. I found stats, news and anecdotes online, but the meat of the book came from the wonderful and heartwarming reflections of the players, coaches and executives. The reaction I’ve received from readers and participants in the book has been incredible!”

Dog Ears Bookstore is also pleased to announce the release of Brigid’s Fire: The South Buffalo Anthology of Poetry. Published by No Frills Buffalo and featuring poetry by 22 local poets, Brigid’s Fire is also available exclusively at Dog Ears Bookstore. Even the book’s cover features a design created by a local talent, graphic designer Peter Clancy of South Buffalo.

A gathering to celebrate the release of Brigid’s Fire will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, February 17, at the bookstore. Several poets with works featured in the book will be on hand to do readings during the event, and refreshments will be served.

The public is also invited to participate in Dog’s Ears 4th Friday Poetry Series, held on the fourth Friday of every month. Sessions include featured readers and open reading slots in a relaxed atmosphere that’s perfect for first-time poets who would like to try out their work before a friendly audience. A $2 donation will support educational programs offered by the bookstore.
