Fine dining comes to the southeast corner of Oakwood and Elm on Mon., Jan. 17, when Wallenwein’s kicks off its monthly 40th Anniversary Dinner Club. In honor of the year the Holmes family—Walt and Rose, son Stubby, daughter Debbie and now grandson Lance— began operating the bar and restaurant, the price for the three-course meal will be $19.70.

The Dinner Club is the brainchild of three of Wallenwein’s employees: Chris Riley, Sue Holland Kowerko and Ben Holmes. Riley came onboard last summer and immediately looked for a way to upgrade the popular tavern’s menu. Check the specials board at Wally’s next time you’re there and you’re liable to find creative additions to the usual fare. Witness the Caribbean surf ‘n turf, grilled Portobello mushrooms, and blackened trout on the board over the holidays. Riley is an experienced restaurant guy who began his career at age 13, washing dishes and cooking at Hennigan’s. The West Seneca West grad has also worked at Nektar on Elmwood in Buffalo and at Metzger’s in West Seneca. In his off hours he’s pursuing his degree in culinary arts at ECC.
