Vote on East Aurora School Roof Project is Tuesday

by Jeremy Morlock

East Aurora School District residents will vote Tues., Jan. 25 on whether to approve a plan to install new roofs over portions of the High School building on Center Street, replacing leaky structures. Though the construction costs are expected to be $90,000, district officials said that the use of reserve funds and state aid will mean that the project has no direct tax impact.

At a public hearing Jan. 12, District Business Administrator Paul Blowers explained that the total project cost, including interest, will total $1,088,964. The district will spend $250,000 from its Repair Reserve Fund toward that cost, and will also borrow up to $650,000. However, New York State will provide building aid to cover the majority of the overall cost. Since the building aid will be high—totaling approximately $865,200—and the district has the reserve funds, the state will actually pay the district more each year in aid than the district will owe. “There are going to be excess revenues in that 16-year [borrowing] period,” Blowers explained. He expects the district to get back $26,236 more than it spends over those 16 years.
