Village of East Aurora Residents Will be Rewarded for Recycling

by Julie Hadley

Residents of the Village of East Aurora have an opportunity to take part in a new program that promotes recycling while providing participants with discount coupons for national and regional merchants. The village, in partnership with Waste Management, launched “Think Green Rewards” as of Jan. 1.

According to Mike DeClerck of Waste Management, this pilot program is “the tip of the sword. There are a handful of similar programs in the United States,” DeClerck said, but the East Aurora program is one of the first in New York. “The ratio of recycling in East Aurora is higher than in other parts of the state.”

DeClerck explained that a typical participant could expect to receive approximately $180 in benefits, but East Aurora residents “stand to do better than that, based on historical data. People don’t need to do anything differently than they’re doing now.”

The program is based on a point system, DeClerck explained. The total tonnage of recycled materials on any given collection route is weighed, and points will be awarded to each participant in the program. “People are not penalized for not participating,” DeClerck said, adding that the hope is that neighbors will encourage each other to sign up. The points can be redeemed for discount coupons ranging in value from $5-$40.
