Tax Protest: Erie County Legislature Dems
News

In this election year for the Erie County Executive and the County Legislature, some lawmakers are criticizing what they say is a tax hike from County Executive Chris Collins.

During a rally at the Rath Building, some Democratic members of the Legislature said Collins ignored their $8 Million re-allocation of funding for libraries, cultural, and youth programs in the recent budget. They claim the Republican county executive is using a lawsuit to keep extra funding from property taxes after their unsuccessful effort to override his budget veto.

Legislature Majority Leader Maria Whyte said "The County Executive cannot have it both ways. He either needs to fund the things we value or he needs to give us the money back. It's our money and that is today our message."

Erie County spokesman Grant Loomis issued this statement : "All taxpayers have to do is look on their tax bill to know that Maria Whyte is once again lying about the county executive's record. The tax rate is $5.03 and in fact taxes went down by $451,000 dollars."
