Southtowns Hit With Morning Lake Effect

EAST AURORA, N.Y. -- The Southtowns woke to a blast of lake effect snow on Friday, just in time for the morning commute. By 9 a.m., East Aurora had been socked with 7.5" of new snow, while West Seneca, just slightly to the north, had received only 3.3".

Schools in Hamburg, Orchard Park and East Aurora had already made the call to stay open and buses were on the roads by the time the snow got underway in earnest. However, East Aurora schools did end up cancelling afternoon kindergarten. Schools further south, in Holland and Gowanda, had already called off classes.

2 On Your Side's Autumn Lewandowski says that even though Lake Erie is nearly frozen over, lake effect snow bands can still develop when conditions are right.
