Snowy Sidewalks Draw EA Mayor's Criticism

The snow on East Aurora’s sidewalks has Mayor Allan Kasprzak all steamed up. Village law requires commercial and residential property owners to keep sidewalks “free and clear of snow, ice and all other obstructions,” but in many areas the sidewalks are hidden and barely passable for pedestrians.

The situation, which seems to repeat itself every year, is frustrating for Kasprzak. At a Jan. 18 Village Board meeting, the mayor freely named some of those he blames for contributing to the situation. “I’m extremely dissatisfied… I will blame everyone; I will blame some residents, I will blame some businesses, and I will blame the village also,” Kasprzak said.

In particular, he named Dunkin Donuts, Tim Hortons, the new Mobil Express Mini-Mart, businesses on Riley Street, and an unnamed fitness facility.

When private plowing contractors clear lots or driveways “they’re supposed to put the snow back on the property. Too many times I’ve seen the snow going on someone else’s property, going across the street, or even leaving it in the street itself so that village plows can take care of it.”
