Legion Collecting Old Phones and Accessories

“Did you or someone you know get a new cell phone for Christmas and you don’t know what to do with the old one?” asks East Aurora American Legion Post 362. “Well, here’s the answer.”

For the past three and a half years, Post 362 has been collecting used cell phones and accessories for the Cell Phones for Soldiers program. The phones are forwarded to a recycling center in Michigan, which creates funds to purchase AT&T calling cards. These cards are then distributed to soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and in American military hospitals, so that they can call home for free.

Since the Legion became an official collection site in May 2007, more than 550 pounds of used phones, chargers and accessories have been sent for recycling.

Donated items can be dropped off at the Legion between 2 and 8 p.m. daily. The post is located at One Legion Drive off Center Street. Items can also be dropped in the collection bin in the showroom at East Aurora Buick/ GMC/ Cadillac at 535 Main St. The dealership is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours until 9 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and until 6 p.m. on Wednesday and Friday.
