East Aurora High School Prepares for 'Seussical'

by Julie Hadley

East Aurora High School will present “Seussical, The Musical” Feb. 11 through 13 at the High School auditorium. Director Chris Cummins, in his second time at the helm, oversees upwards of 150 students in the production, based on characters in several of Dr. Seuss’ books.

“There was debate on whether we wanted to do another children’s show,” Cummins admitted. “We chose this one because it’s something that everyone can relate to. Dr. Seuss just connects with everybody.”

The musical follows Horton the Elephant, The Whos of Whoville, and of course, The Cat in The Hat, who narrates the program. Senior Jessica Goodison portrays The Cat, drawing inspiration, she said, from Jim Carrey’s “Grinch” character.

“The Cat is like nothing I’ve ever done before,” Goodison said. “I have to step out of my comfort zone a lot. Throughout the entire show I’m supposed to be crazy and wild. I approached the character thinking I was going to be a cool conductor of JoJo’s imagination, but Mr. Cummins wants me to be insane, not right in the head,” she laughed. “I’ve been working on that, doing different things with my voice, I’m getting a little better, but it’s been tough.”
